WEATHER UPDATES
It’s important to stay informed about ongoing weather conditions. Here are some important weather safety tips.
- Pay attention to current weather conditions through local radio and television reports.
- During high-wind events, basements, closets and bathrooms are great places to stay. Avoid windows and doors that lead outside. In a wind emergency, you can also take shelter in a bathtub covered with plywood or similar materials.
- Stay inside until there’s no doubt that the event is over.
- Find another safe home or shelter if your home is flooded or emergency personnel recommend doing so.

Use these websites and phone numbers to quickly get help in an emergency. For an active, life-threatening emergency, call 911. For a medical/functional emergency, call 211.

SAFETY & RECOVERY TIPS
Follow these tips as needed in the aftermath of severe weather:
- Document any damage that was done to your home as a result of the storm.
- If you’re dealing with burst pipes after freezing weather, you can find a licensed plumber in your area by visiting the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- Call 311 (if you live in Houston) or 211 (if you live elsewhere in Texas) to find a shelter or a community assistance program in your area.
- Restock your home emergency kit if you used it during the event. If you don’t have an emergency kit and want to build one, here’s a guide to ensuring you have what you need: ready.gov/kit.
- After an extended power outage, do not taste perishable food to find out if it’s still safe to eat. When in doubt, throw it away.
- Check for and seal any air leaks that may have been created around doors and windows to reduce the amount of electricity it takes your HVAC system to keep you comfortable.
